Happy 1st Day of Summer, Bridger!
As many of you know, there are some changes coming to the Bridger SUN Program on July 1st. As of July 1st the Bridger SUN Program will be run by Latino Network. We will still be serving all members of the Bridger community, but we will have access to some new and exciting resources for the Latino community. Priority for afterschool classes will be given to those students at risk for academic failure and we will do our best to ensure students who would like to participate in SUN are given the chance to do so. Unfortunately, with the change in agency comes some changes in staffing. Geoffrey "Mr. Geoffwah" Blackmer will not longer be in his role as the Bridger SUN Extended Day Coordinator/Food Pantry Coordinator and his last day will be June 30th. Geoffrey has been an integral part of the Bridger community and he will be missed! The Bridger SUN-sponsored Food for Families will also be changing with the new school year. Due to limited funding through the Oregon Food Bank, Bridger will be transitioning to a Harvest Share site. Food distribution will still take place on the 3rd Friday of the month, 3pm-5pm, but will no longer include dry good/shelf stable items. Harvest Share will offer delicious, fresh produce and will be open to everyone in the community. Due to low participation numbers at the end of the school year, the Latino Parent Group will no longer meet on the first Friday of the month. Instead, we will be hosting a month Latino Family Dinner on the last Wednesday of the month. This will give parents and community members to enjoy a nice dinner, learn about what is going on at Bridger and in PPS, and childcare will be offered. If you turned in a summer SUN registration form for the 2016 Summer Session reminder post cards will be sent out at the end of June/beginning of July. If you have any questions regarding the Bridger SUN Program do not hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected] or 503-502-1485. Thank you!

On April 30th, Bridger SUN will be throwing a big party for Children's Day or Dia de los Ninos, as it's called in Mexico. This event is all about the kids and will include games, Mexican snacks, pinatas, candy and fun. We need your help! Please save your clean egg shells and they will be turned into Cascarones (confetti-filled eggshells). Bring them to the SUN office! You can also help by donating a bag of candy that will be used as party favors.
The middle of July marked the end of another successful year of SUN classes! Fifty students hung out with us for four weeks this summer, and together we explored everything from how to set up a tent, to making a Korean dish called kim bap to learning about solar energy. We went on treasure hunts, made sponge bombs, and learned to identify animal tracks. We did art, used compasses, and talked to a man from Ghana. We learned so much! The end of summer SUN marks a significant time, as we said goodbye to our beloved Ms. V. She will be leaving Bridger to go teach her very own class of students at a charter school in NE Portland. Her fourth and fifth graders will be so lucky to have her! We will miss her dearly around here. The SUN office and after school programming will not be the same without her. The hunt will begin soon to find a new Extended Day Activities Coordinator for Bridger SUN. On Wednesday, April 17, Bridger was alive with the 350 parents, students, and neighbors who came to celebrate the different cultures represented at Bridger. We enjoyed performances by several classes (Maestra Yesenia, Julia, Ms. Jessica, and Mr. T), as well as student performances with their families. Seventh graders Tenzin Dhargyal and Tia Joseph both performed dances with their family members- what a treat! The crowd was wowed by the Mexican folkloric dance of the troupe El Ballet Folklorico Sol Azteca, with their bright dresses and lively performance. After the performances, families got to enjoy some time making crafts together (paper lanterns, Indian rangolis, woven bracelets and tissue paper flowers). It was so fun to see adults and children together getting creative! The end of the evening was the "sweetest" part with tastes of desserts from around the world. We enjoyed Vietnamese butter cookies, Hong Kong rolls from China, Honey Cake from Russia and Mexican Tres Leches cake. A big thank you to all of the Bridger staff, community volunteers and parents who spent countless hours to make the night run smoothly. Also, we are especially grateful for PTA's support, who provided the funding for the evening. Yesterday, the cafeteria was all abuzz as all the SUN students and teachers gathered to celebrate all that we have learned this fall in our SUN classes. AKA Science shared about how sound is made, Art Adventures shared an awesome slideshow of their very own, very scary monsters, and Music Foundations serenaded us with a sweet song. The SUN Superstars were announced and we all got to enjoy Otter Pops, a special treat.
Thanks to everyone who made this session of SUN great! We look forward to planning new, fun and exciting classes for our winter term. Stay tuned! **MEALS FOR MINDS TOMORROW- Friday 11/16/12 from 3-5pm in the cafeteria** Bridger is lucky to have received another generous grant from Target to continue the Meals for Minds food box distribution program. Our first distribution will be on Friday, October 19th from 3-5pm in the cafeteria. Any family with a student at Bridger can come and pick out 22lbs of food per student.
